Our Story

Ella Wong entered into a partnership with Mary in 2014 and later became sole Director in 2020. Under her direction, Pilates Tasmania has grown to operate state wide, with established community group mat classes and workplace partnerships with some of Tasmania’s major employers.
Our Philosophy
If you ask either of us why we choose to work in the Pilates industry, the answer is sure to be ‘because we love it!’
The changes we observe within our own bodies from the practice of Pilates, let alone in those whom we teach, are truly remarkable and we both enjoy sharing our knowledge with all our clients to better enhance their physical health and wellbeing.
We tailor every session with the needs of each individual body in mind. We care deeply about the function of the human body and our aim is to teach functional movement and postural awareness to keep your body strong, flexible, healthy and safe, regardless of age or condition.
Because we love what we do
Testimonials
“I have been attending Ella’s’ classes for several years and love her tough hands-on approach. If I move out of alignment, then Ella will notice and gently correct me. The classes are intentionally small to ensure we each have her attention and Ella’s’ attention to detail is amazing.
Although many of the moves in themselves are quite simple, when you add in the breathing and correct positioning of body so that it is in alignment, the class is both physically and mentally challenging. I always leave the class feeling as though I have gained something, even if it is as simple as remembering to keep shoulders back and not flare my ribs!!
Moving to online classes has been surprisingly good. Ella is still able to focus on correcting our positions and her instructions are clear and easy to follow as if we were in the same room. We even get the occasional dog wandering into the session and joining in! I enjoy these classes because they help correct all the bad postural habits that we pick up from sitting at a computer all day. To be taught by someone as passionate and knowledgeable as Ella is a privilege.” – Robyn
“I am a Pilates newbie, but have learnt so much in the past few months. The instructors are inspiring, motivating and very attentive. I always feel several inches taller after class, and more positive physically and mentally. Thank you!” – Georgina
“I used to be a once a week Pilates-goer but I now find it hard to resist its pull twice a week. Pilates brings together for me three crucial elements, body, mind and conscience – there is no doubt Pilates is good for my body, stretching it out into unfamiliar poses and letting me rediscover my abs and triceps at almost every session! I’m also investing in my future – I know I’ll appreciate the benefits way into the years ahead. While engaging in the challenges of mastering a technique, sustaining a position or breathing through “hundreds”, my mind can wander to nowhere else, giving it a wonderful break and resetting it to engage with a new page of life. My conscience is appeased with every class I attend – I’m doing something for my physical and mental wellbeing and it feels very satisfying. Despite isolating during the COVID19 pandemic, Pilates continues – it’s amazing how seamless it is to have these sessions presented online and I appreciate Pilates Tasmania for providing routine and stability in this way during times of uncertainty.” – Chris
“I love my online Pilates classes with Ella! After every class I feel stronger, taller and more flexible. Ella is passionate about Pilates, and is a dedicated, encouraging and creative teacher. I get the same individual attention whether online or in person – there is no hiding from Ella’s eagle eye! Ella takes time to explain the techniques and exercises and experiments with expressing instructions in different ways. This careful attention to correct technique and precise instruction means that I feel very safe in the class. Ella makes the classes fun and interesting, by incorporating new learnings and challenges. Online classes are so easy to attend too!” – Juliet
“I have attended Pilates Tasmania classes twice a week for several years and have found them to be of enormous benefit to my fitness, core strength and flexibility. The classes are both enjoyable and challenging, and the instructors, who always encourage best possible practice, are friendly, knowledgeable and professional.” – Kate
“Pilates Tasmania has been a wonderful experience for me. Regular practice has meant I no longer have lower back pain, and the focus on my breathing whilst exercising has improved my overall mental health. Ella is very attentive and readily identifies changes to my practice that help me increase my core strength.” – Jenn
“I find Pilates greatly enhances my core, balance and strength, it’s surprisingly challenging to do well; mentally and physically. But Ella and her team are the most technically capable sports coaches I’ve ever had; period. The classes also build well-being and confidence; I love Pilates and embed it in my life schedule; missing it is depressing.” – Richard
“I’ve been attending classes with Pilates Tasmania for over 4 years and always look forward to the next session. The classes leave me feeling stronger and more flexible for the rest of the day, and into the week. I enjoy these classes because the instructors always provide clear guidance, and really pay attention to the technique of individuals, including adapting exercises to be pregnancy-friendly. You always know you’re in safe hands, but leave a class feeling like you’ve been working hard!” – Hanne
“As a past professional, I have the highest regard for the highly honed skills, professionalism and dedication of Ella, Mary and their band of teachers. Nothing passes their eagle eyes – even online! We are all challenged – newcomers and old hands alike. My core and dodgy back salute them for maintaining them in such good nick and keep visits to the osteopath infrequent.” – Cathy
“In a time of unprecedented disruption and uncertainty the seamless move online of our mat classes has been terrific.
This has meant I can continue to maintain the physical well being that the three previous years of mat classes has given me. The freedom from more than 25 years of back weakness is so worth maintaining!” – Ian
I have been doing pilates for around 2 years now and its the best thing I have ever done for myself. Not only is my body in much better shape and more toned I love the fact when you go to a class you have a good mind workout too with all the concentration. If you haven’t tried it, give it a go, you cant lose.
I recently attended pilates classes led by both Mary and Gin. You were both fantastic. Hard work but very rewarding, I enjoyed the sessions very much and felt inspired to do more. If only I lived in Hobart!!
“I keep attending Pilates partly because I’m afraid not to, and partly because of the strength and flexibility I gain from it which help me so much to achieve correct posture in a rowing-boat. (rowing is one of my life’s passions)
The first reason relates to the back-pain I was suffering around eight years ago. I was introduced to Pilates by my partner, Michele. A doctor had suggested I think about wearing a brace. Michele scoffed, and said to try Pilates. She encouraged me through the difficulties I had with the exercises, after which I joined one of Mary’s regular classes. I enjoyed some relief from my back-pain quite soon after beginning Pilates, and after several years I am free of pain almost always.
I was always a “slumper” in a rowing-boat. I could neither sit up at the start of the stroke, nor avoid bending my power back at the “finish”. This has all sorts of adverse consequences from slowing the boat to being a contributing factor to injury. Pilates has slowly but surely helped me to be able to “reshape” my technique in rowing.”
“For me it’s a 40/60 approach.
40% is related to the benefits I receive from Pilates as it conditions the whole body. Each week I am strengthening not just my core but every other muscle from arms, torso, butt, legs; gain muscle and joint flexibility; and it all subconsciously flows into daily improved posture, movement, balance and wellbeing.
The remaining 60% is all about the instructor. Ella and Mary know my name and make an effort to engage so that we all know a little about each outside of pilates-land; each is a delightful, first-rate instructor who articulates the move and technique with a verbal explanation and a demo; provide variety in class through different equipment or by tailoring moves to suit my needs and level; and make gentle corrections to my technique to ensure maximum benefit. Classes are enjoyable and positive. It’s this combination that keeps me coming back.”
“I came to Pilates three years ago after feeling old, tired and having bad posture from standing hunched after 30 years of hairdressing.
One hour per week of Pilates is the bare minimum but has had the most impact on all my joints, ligaments and my posture. Core strength has lifted my body up and out of the hunched posture I was in. I feel it also centres me through breath and lengthens all my body more than any years of gym work or massage. I feel much taller, stronger and positive. That is why I return week after week to Pilates with Ella and Mary.
Wish I’d started Pilates 20 years ago.”
